ImageNo TissuesDear Diary:I was staying with a friend in Murray Hill while back in New York for a visit in 2019. We talked openly and honestly and deeply on the subway ride back, acknowledging the love that still connected us. I kissed him goodbye at Grand Central and started walking. He had been the love of my life, and I knew this might be the last time I ever saw him. Hoping to get some napkins, I stopped into a diner on Lexington Avenue that I had often gone to when I lived in the city.

Ms. Blum and Dr. Flowers, then a resident in internal medicine at the University of Miami Hospital, had moved to Miami months earlier after receiving his M.D. Ms. Blum often traveled to Latin America for work. Until then, Mara Hoffman had been the go-to purveyor of sexy psychedelic prints and bikinis for the Coachella crowd. “I did a strip show, tried everything on and they placed their first order,” Ms. Hoffman said. As time wore on, Mara Hoffman the brand felt increasingly disconnected from Mara Hoffman the woman, on a spiritual and aesthetic level. At one point Ms. Hoffman found herself crying on her couch, telling Ms. Davis that she wanted to close the business. “Burn it to the ground,” Ms. Hoffman said.

New Yorkers fed up with a tough housing market are making the pilgrimage to Jersey City. New York City housing is becoming more elusive and expensive, and Jersey City is an attractive option. That's not to say that Jersey City is much cheaper, but there are more options: Along the Hudson River waterfront in Jersey City, dozens of luxury high-rises have sprouted up within the last 10 years, some filled with their own coffee shops, heated pools, and rooftop dog runs. Now, he knows at least eight to 10 acquaintances who have taken the Jersey City plunge since he moved. When it comes to the space and amenities that Jersey City provides, "once you have it, you can't go back."

Trade between the US and Mexico reached $263 billion during the first four months of this year. That pushed Mexico past China and Canada as the top trade partner since the start of the pandemic. China was the top partner for much of the 2010s and again at the start of the pandemic. Trade with Mexico accounted for 15.4% of all the goods exported and imported by the US, just ahead of America's trade totals with Canada (15.2%) and China (12.0%). Brigid Berlin, a fixture of the downtown art world in the ’60s and ’70s, will be forever associated with Andy Warhol — the Factory superstar played Duchess, a version of herself as a lesbian drug dealer, in Warhol and Paul Morrissey’s 1966 film “Chelsea Girls” — but three years after her death in 2020, a new exhibition considers Berlin’s art in its own right. “Brigid really was an innovator when you think of the way she used persona as a medium,” says Alison M. Gingeras, who has curated “Brigid Berlin: The Heaviest,” at New York’s Vito Schnabel Gallery, which examines the artist’s life, from her tony uptown upbringing to her secluded later life, with the wild times in between. “For too long she has been pushed into the footnotes.” In a room that features the same wallpaper as Berlin’s Murray Hill apartment, visitors can peruse photos and letters from her childhood. “Brigid Berlin: The Heaviest,” is on view through Aug. 18, vitoschnabel.com. Murray Hill Is Ready to Share His Personal Life
  + stars: | 2023-06-27 | by ( Shane O Neill | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Murray Hill’s signature catchphrase is a percussive “Showbiz!” When he began performing as a drag king in New York during the mid-90s on stages he recalls being “the size of a postage stamp,” shouting “Showbiz!” called out the irony of his Vegas showman persona against the gritty and grimy environs of underground drag clubs. Today, at age 51, with roles as Fred Rococo on HBO’s “Somebody Somewhere,” which was recently renewed for a third season, and as host of Hulu’s new game show “Drag Me to Dinner,” the distance between Mr. Hill and the mainstream is shrinking. Still, his life isn’t wall-to-wall glamour. “I’m in a two-bedroom apartment right now, the second bedroom being my bathroom where I’m talking to you,” he told me from his home in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, during our video call. For Pride season, which lasts the month of June, we unleashed Mr. Hill on the town with his iPhone to capture some of his most “Showbiz!” moments.

But the materials are expensive and still face supply bottlenecks compared with the cheaper standard silicon used in most chips. The company has previously raised funding from semiconductor manufacturing equipment maker Applied Materials (AMAT.O). iDEAL has partnered with Bloomington, Minnesota-based chip manufacturer Polar Semiconductor to make its first chips and is planning to roll them out later this year. Granahan said silicon carbide chips can still beat iDEAL's for certain applications including the extremely high voltage chips needed for applications such as electric semi trucks. But he said iDEAL's chips could be competitive for about 90% of the overall market for power chips.

Junior bankers hold an interesting position on Wall Street. While these young investment bankers are often the butt of the joke — something something Murray Hill something something Patagonia vests — they also represent a key piece of the dealmaking machine. That's why I always find surveys of junior bankers so fascinating. Emmalyse examined 10 different slides from the poll, which was conducted by recruiting firm Odyssey Search Partners, that show what junior bankers like, and don't like, about their jobs. Pro Take: Election Will Influence Tech Policy on the Margins

Nonetheless, when all results are in, election results may shape technology policy and regulation in some important respects. There are some matters of tech policy that won’t be addressed in any single election, because they are long-term issues, according to Michael Burns, partner with private-equity and venture-capital investor Murray Hill Group. The Biden administration is taking aggressive action that includes cutting off supplies of advanced semiconductors and machines used to make them, according to Mr. Burns. “The next challenge is aligning on industrial policy with outcomes measured in 5 to 10 or even 15-year horizons. This is hard in a system where the next election cycle is considered long term.”Write to Steven Rosenbush at steven.rosenbush@wsj.com

Chip-Making Push Expected to Boost U.S. Innovation

U.S. efforts to boost domestic semiconductor manufacturing will have a beneficial impact on homegrown innovation, in part by ensuring tech startups have the resources they need to scale emerging technologies, industry experts said. Newsletter Sign-up WSJ | CIO Journal The Morning Download delivers daily insights and news on business technology from the CIO Journal team. PREVIEWMs. Levine, speaking Tuesday at The Wall Street Journal’s CIO Network online summit, said a robust domestic semiconductor industry can help unlock downstream innovation. The bipartisan Chips and Science Act, which Congress approved in July, goes a long way to boost innovation, Ms. Levine said. But in a capital-intensive industry like semiconductor fabs, where other countries have long supported private manufacturers, “it’s problematic that the U.S. isn’t involved,” Mr. Burns said.
